Designing, making and evaluating a pencil case.

The children were tasked with designing, making and evaluating a pencil case for a friend. They needed to consider the audience, purpose and functionality for their pencil cases. They also learnt about Gideon Sunback's invention of the modern zip helped to shape the world. Children built on their previous work with simple stitches in KS1 and used this knowledge to attach a fastener to their pencil case.

Designing, making and evaluating a pneumatic system for a chair

To build upon the knowledge and skills gained during the structures module on building a chair, children had to consider how to make a pneumatic system for a chair to enable Baby Bear's chair to grow with him. The children explored different pneumatic systems and made a basic one, before designing, making and evaluating their pneumatic chair system.

Designing, making and evaluating a chair for Baby Bear.

We looked at existing chairs and used this knowledge as well as our previous understanding of strength, stiffness and stability to design a chair for Baby Bear. We built upon our knowledge in KS1 of triangles being used to strengthen and considered cylinders in our design. We made a chair using cutting and joining skills and then evaluated them. Here are our finished products.

Making an egg based dish with a side salad and dressing

Children designed an egg based dish for someone in the community. Their dish also had a side salad which children prepared using their knife safety skills, as well as a dressing which helped children understand about the different components in a simple dressing. Children used annotated diagrams to design their product before preparing, cutting, mixing and cooking the various ingredients. Children then tasted their products to evaluate them against their design brief.
