PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE WHAT WILLOW CLASS HAVE BEEN UP TO RECENTLY

Welcome to Willow Class' information and blog page.  Here you will find general class information and see what we have been up to in our learning. smiley

Class teacher

Miss Aughton

Support staff

Phase TAs will support in the class throughout the week

PE days

PE will be on a Monday and a Thursday. Please make sure your child has a PE Kit in school.

This needs to simply be a pair of black or navy shorts, a plain white t-shirt and a pair of pumps or trainers for going outside. Black or navy zipped hoodies can also be worn in cold weather.

Children can wear their school kit all day on PE days if they wish - please note they are not permitted to wear other sports clothes.

Homework

Homework will be set on Google Classrooms. Your child will be sent a homework grid via the school app that has a variety of English, Maths and Topic activities on it for them to complete. They choose to do at least one activity each week (although they can do more!) Your child's username and password will be stuck in their Reading Record Book. Their homework needs to be submitted by Thursday, as I will look at it  before Friday.

Reading and Times Tables

Our school expectation is that your child reads at least three times a week at home to an adult. This needs to be recorded in your child's reading record and signed by an adult. This record needs to be brought into school every day. We will check this on a Friday and children achieve a reading sticker on their bookmark.

Once their bookmark is full they will receive a brand new book to keep as a prize :)

If your child needs to change their reading book, it will get changed on a Friday in their Read Write Inc group.

Your child will also have access and passwords to Times Table Rockstars and Purple Mash. Their usernames and passwords will be put in their Reading Record Books as soon as we have them all.

Sequencing and writing captions for Whatever Next!

Willow Class today

Today, Willow Class have been learning about greater than, less than, and equal to in maths. We then learnt about what happened during The Great Fire of London.

Alongside this, they have been completing lots of practical activities, including designing and decorating their own flame for The Great Fire of London! 🔥

Provision Activities

A day in Willow Class

Today, the children have been exploring new provision in the class. They are working hard trying to secure their number recognition and formation up to 10.

We had printouts of the children at forest school, and the children practised writing things that they enjoyed- this was really lovely and the children were all excited to see themselves!

We also have a role play fire station, where the children are able to dress up and pretend that they were in The Great Fire of London 🔥

Whilst completing provision, there is always a focus table of children completing our class task for the subject that day. In maths we are learning about 1 more and 1 less than a number. In English, we are looking at the story ‘Whatever Next!’. The children have been sequencing the story, labelling and writing short captions about the story. They are doing a fantastic job 🐻 🧮 ✒️

Maths Provision Activities

Forest School

On Thursday, the children all took turns to experience forest school. Half of the class went out in the morning, and the other half in the afternoon. They all had a fantastic time, and loved exploring the nature outside! The children watched the teacher making a fire, and they all had reflection time. The children then made an incredible den using sticks and twigs that they found 🌲 🍁 🔥

Class activities

The children have been participating in daily provision activities, alongside their normal lessons. They have shown their incredible number writing skills. Great work Willow Class 🧮

In maths, the children have been looking at counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. They worked as pairs to identify all the groups of 2s.

Our daily learning 🧪

Here is a look into our day in Willow class. One group of children worked with me to complete their science activity- everyday uses of materials. Another group were working hard on cutting out and creating their boxes for design and technology. The final table were completing a continuous provision activity linking with our science, they had to figure out which items matched with each material. These groups work on rotation, and the children have a go at completing each task. Great work Willow 📝

This week in D+T, the children learnt about and discussed butt joints. We discussed how we could make our box stronger and more stable. The children each took turns to cut a piece of wood using a saw. We had a discussion about how we can do this safely. Both the children and I wore goggles to ensure nothing damaged our eyes, the children kept one arm behind their back to ensure their fingers were no where near the saw, the wood was secure in the vice, and they ensured that they had plenty of room around them to saw.

Where would you rather be-Blackpool or Rio?

We have a focus on Geography this half term and are learning about two places Rio de Janeiro in South America and Blackpool which is in Europe and in the country we live in.

We will learn lots of facts about these places, compare them and ultimately decide where we would rather be!

The knowledge organiser below will tell you more about our learning.

Design and Technology

This week in D+T, the children have been set a task to create a box to carry Mrs Maynard’s special egg. We began by exploring different boxes to then discuss if they were stable, strong, what material they were made out of, and what their purpose was.

Art

This week, the children have been experimenting with different tones and tints. They each created a beautiful piece of art 🖼️ 🎨

Science walk around the park

As part of our science learning about the seasons we have walked to the Nuthurst park.
We were focusing on what the trees and park look like in winter.
We talked about evergreen trees that don’t lose their leaves and deciduous trees whose leaves turn red, orange and yellow then turn brown and fall off the trees.
We saw berries for the birds to feed on in winter.
The children enjoyed looking at the different leaves on the floor. Then we had fun playing in the snow and saw birds footprints in the snow.

Art

In art this week the children experimented with mixing play dough to think about colour mixing.
They had the primary colours of red, yellow and blue and mixed these to make the secondary colours.
The children then experimenting with adding white and black to create tints, tones and shades.
The children really enjoyed the lesson and are developing their skills.

RE - Who is my neighbour

At the beginning of the lesson, all the children told me the name of the person who lived next door to them when they were asked: "Who is your neighbour?"

After we watched the story of The Good Samaritan, the children learnt that a neighbour is someone who is kind and helpful and cares for you.

In the pictures below you can see freeze frames of helping someone find their way and helping someone who doesn't know what to do.

Part Whole Models

This week in maths, Willow class have been learning about part whole models. They have shown different examples of how we can use our part whole model to support us in our maths lessons. Fantastic work 🧠😌

Birds of Prey Visit

What a treat to finish off our topic ‘Do all animals need sleep?’ Today, we had a visit from Birds of Prey. We met some very cheeky owls and learnt lots of facts about them. They swooped over our heads and we even got to hold one!

KS1 Role Play Areas

In each KS1 class there is a role play area. This half term our topic has been 'Do all animals need sleep?'. We have had a pet shop, zoo and veterinary surgery. Below are some pictures of the vet role play area we have at the moment smiley

After Christmas, our topic is called 'Is it ever cold in Africa?'. I wonder what we will have in our role play areas next?

Poo Investigation!

This week we have been thinking about what different animals eat. We have learnt that there are three different groups - herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We discussed the meaning of each word and investigated poo (it wasn't real!) to work out which group the animal belonged to.

Herbivores eat plants.

Carnivores eat meat/animals.

Omnivores eat both plants and meat/animals.

Here are some pictures of the children investigating!

Google Classroom

We are now putting homework on Google Classroom for the children to complete.

There would also be learning put onto Google Classroom if the school had to shut due to unforeseen circumstances.

There has been an invitation sent for them to accept and join the classroom.

Every child has their e mail address and password which they will need to access the classroom in their reading record book.

I am also attaching a guide to using Google Classroom which will hopefully help you if you are new to this!

If you need any support with this, please contact your child's teacher or me (Mrs Waddell) and one of us can go through this with you.

There are also useful Read, Write, Inc videos for the children to watch to support their learning in school.

Remember: we are here to help!

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our blog! Here you will find information about all the things we have been up to in Willow Class.

We had a lovely first week together, I really enjoyed getting to know the children and hearing all about them. The children settled really nicely and enjoyed being in their new classroom. Just like in Reception, we have areas within the classroom. These include a creative table, maths table, writing table, reading area, funky fingers area and even a challenge area. Each week the children complete the activity within that area, if they complete all 6 activities they can choose a special prize from my prize box on a Friday.

Here are some pictures of the lovely work we did during our first week in Year One!
