PE

Intent

New Moston Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. In line with our school vision aiming to support all children to become the very best version of themselves we follow the Real PE approach to teaching PE. Real PE is a unique, child-centred approach with the aim to challenge every child. It is supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression and ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at New Moston, whilst also promoting the importance of co-operation with others as part of being an effective team. Supporting the children in understanding fairness and equity of play, aiming to embed these as life-long values within our pupils.

Implementation

Children are encouraged to participate in exercise throughout the day during PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning, lunch provision, sporting events and as part of the Weekly Mile. Children have a minimum of two PE lessons a week taught by a combination of class teachers and HLTAs, with qualified sports coaches visiting school to lead specialised sessions.

At New Moston we use the Real PE approach, enabling the children to gain experience of a variety of fundamental skills that focus on agility, balance, co-ordination and fitness. Children also take part in sessions that work on individual skills, group skills and team games to promote collaboration and fair play.

By following Real PE our approach to PE focuses on the fundamental movement skills of a child's physical development:

  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Co-ordination

Real PE also enables us to focus on developing the whole child and the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport and across the whole curriculum.

Each term there is a multi-ability focus:

  • Personal
  • Social
  • Cognitive
  • Creative
  • Physical
  • Health and Fitness

Real PE is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements, and focuses on the development of agility, balance and co-ordination, healthy competition and co-operative learning in PE. More information on Real PE can be obtained from https://jasmineactive.com/

Impact

At New Moston Primary School we see PE as a vital part of the curriculum not only through PE lessons but through cross curricular links too. We know that good mental health is integral to pupils’ development and for their progression throughout school in general. We want children to experience the benefits of exercise and to understand how regular exercise can lead to healthier and happier futures for all.  We want them to gain enjoyment, fulfilment and success from PE lessons, leading them to feel inspired and enthusiastic to participate in physical activities in wider society. Our approach promotes inclusion for all children and focuses on their current level of skill and physical development with progression in mind. By the time our children leave us we want them to be able to embrace challenge, be motivated to consistently try to improve, set themselves appropriate targets, co-operate with others and grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
