PSHE / SRE

Intent

At New Moston Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of a global society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, and to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

Implementation

PSHE is taught across the school from Year 1- Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, we follow the PSHE Association Thematic Model Scheme of Work.

In the Early Years Foundation, the children learn along the themes in our whole school scheme of work within the Prime Area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding and tolerance of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

Learning around Relationship and Sex Education takes place in the Summer Term.  We believe that it is imperative that we include this learning because we recognise that our children will be sexually active, mature adults in the future.

Our aim is to lay solid educational foundations about sex and relationships in order for our children to become strong, confident and responsible citizens who have high self-esteem, respect their bodies and accept their feelings and accept their sexual orientation.

The PSHE Association Thematic Model Scheme of Work teaches the requirements of the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. It directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;

Relationships

  • Families and friendships
  • Safe relationships
  • Respecting ourselves and others

Living in the wider world

  • Belonging to a community
  • Media literacy and digital resilience
  • Money and work

Health and Wellbeing

  • Physical health and Mental wellbeing
  • Growing and changing
  • Keeping safe

Impact

By the time our children leave the setting they will have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere. To have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships. To have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. To have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion for others.
